100s & 1000s Fairies Unite for Mardi Gras 2022

Emerald City Kickball stepped onto the world’s largest stage for LGBTQIA+ individuals for a second time. This time, Emerald City Kickball demonstrated that “United We Shine” by embodying another Australian icon, Fairy Bread! We’re grateful to the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Committee for giving us a Special Commendation Award at the final ceremony.

After many rounds of lockdowns, queer people have struggled having access to safe spaces where they can express themselves freely and connect to their joy. Emerald City Kickball started as a space for members of the community to connect during the pandemic. Our members attest to the ability team sports can have on their mental health and the benefits of having a support community like ours can be to their development.

Team sports like the term fairy can have a negative connotation for many in the LGBTQIA+ community, but fairy bread is something that unites all Australians. Everyone remembers the childhood fun of having that sweet treat of fairy bread. Fairy bread, much like kickball, is a safe field where each of the 100s & 100s shine together without losing their individual colour.
